Governor Scott vetoes UF&Shands GatorCare health plan
On April 20, the governor vetoed the legislation which would have allowed the University to offer GatorCare to the faculty and staff currently included in the state’s health insurance plans. We believed our proposed health and wellness program would have improved the health of our employees while being more cost effective. It is disappointing but we respect the governor’s decision.
What does this mean for GatorCare? We will now turn our full focus to implementation of GatorCare for the 16,000 UF&Shands employees who are excluded from the state insurance programs. This includes employees at Shands Healthcare in Gainesville and Jacksonville, the UF direct support organizations and their affiliates, and the UF graduate assistants and employees on post-doctoral appointments.
We will be sending additional details about the GatorCare plan in the coming weeks.
